Future-proofing integrity: an interview with Professor Sarah Eaton
In February, the Centre for Pedagogical Innovation and Development, Technological University of the Shannon (TUS), welcomed visiting professor, Sarah Eaton (PhD), University of Calgary to its Athlone and Moylish campuses. During her visit, Professor Eaton spoke with NAIN member Frances O'Connell (Vice President for Student Education and Experience at TUS) for the most recent episode of the NAIN podcast series.
The interview centred on Professor Eaton’s recent work which focuses on futureproofing integrity in the age of artificial intelligence and neurotechnology while prioritising human rights, dignity and equity. The discussion highlighted the need for flexible approaches to academic integrity misconduct including restorative justice approaches, as well as traditional, educational approaches. The involvement of students in the development of academic integrity policies and procedures was also highlighted, with reference to the NAIN Framework for Academic Misconduct Investigation and Case Management.
Professor Eaton explained how we can use language to get better engagement from staff and students in relation to academic integrity policies and that we should consider using Artificial Intelligence to supplement learning.
Special thanks to Frances O’Connell for conducting the interview, and to Professor Sarah Eaton for her insights. Explore the full catalogue of NAIN podcasts on the QQI YouTube Channel here.
